- One evening, a Cossack rode to a village and asked to stay
- He was offered a place to stay but if he didn't fear death
- When he went into the cottage, he saw women and children crying and praying
- After inquiring, he was told that at night death looks into a cottage and the next morning people are put in coffins
- When the people fell asleep. At midnight a window opened and a witch appeared
- She reached her arm in with her sprinkler and the Cossack cut off her arm
- She howled and left
- The Cossack cleaned up the blood and placed the witches arm under his coat
- The next morning when the master's of the home awoke, they saw everyone was still alive
- The Cossack explained that he would show them death
- He gathered the villagers to look for the witch
- When they got to the Ponomar's cottage, he explained that one of his daughters was ill
- He asked to see her, and it was a girl missing an arm
- The Cossack told the story and showed the arm
- The girl was drowned
