EC Reading Notes: Rapunzel

  • Once there was a man and a woman who longed for a child
  • At the back of their house was a small window where they could see a beautiful garden
  • The garden was surrounded by a high wall and was owned by an enchantress with great power
  • The woman saw that there was rampion in the garden and wanted some for herself
  • She told her husband that if she didn't get to eat any rampion that she would die
  • The man climbed the wall to the garden and grabbed the rampion for her
  • The lady made a salad but wanted more
  • The man climbed down the wall again but the enchantress was standing before him
  • He explained why he was trespassing and she told him he could take as much rampion as he wanted but they had to give her the child they would bring into the world
  • The man consented and the enchantress went into the room and gave the child the name, Rapunzel. She took her
  • When Rapunzel turned 12, the enchantress locked her in a tower
  • The tower had no stairs or door but had a small window
  • When the enchantress wanted in, she asked Rapunzel to lower her hair
  • A few years passed and the king's son rode by and heard Rapunzel singing
  • He wanted to climb to her but had no way of doing so
  • When he was standing near a tree, he heard the enchantress calling for Rapunzel to lower her hair
  • When it became dark, he called for Rapunzel to let her hair down
  • Rapunzel was scared when she saw him but he told her he had to see her
  • He asked for her hand in marriage and she accepted
  • When the enchantress found out about the king's son, she cut Rapunzel's hair and attached it to the window
  • When the king's son arrived again, he called for Rapunzel but when he reached the top, the enchantress was there 
  • She told him he would never see Rapunzel again
  • He was miserable and roamed for years and found the desert where Rapunzel and the twins lived
  • They went back to his kingdom
