Law and Ghoul

Desmond, a high priced attorney has been living in New York for ten years. He adores his life. He is single, owns a penthouse, and is not interested in settling down.
One fateful day, he was given a case. Desmond was to represent a jewel thief. He had a feeling this case could put him in the running to become partner at his law firm.
When he walked into the conference room, he saw a beautiful woman. Her hair, red like fire and eyes the color of autumn. She wore a blue Chanel suit with pearl buttons, which made her eyes glow. Desmond was immediately drawn to her. There was one problem, she was his client.
He knew it was wrong to fall for his client but asked her out anyway. However, Desmond did not know she was a ghoul. The more time he spent with her, the more his love grew.
After the case was won, she admitted to stealing the jewels. Desmond was so in love with her that her admission of guilt didn't bother him. He asked her to live with him. She agreed but on the condition that he never tell anyone about her being a jewel thief.
The couple married and started a family. Five years and two kids later, Desmond had a little too much bourbon at a party. He told his assistant the truth about his wife. She overheard everything.
Later that night, she angrily approached him, asking why he broke his promise. Desmond apologized for his mistake and said it would never happen again.
She began to cry and suddenly, her skin turned pale. Her eyes sunk in and her fiery hair turned white. She changed into a ghoul right before his eyes.
"You made one promise and broke it, now you must be punished"
She devoured Desmond.

Author's note: The stories I read were The Boy whom Seven Mothers Suckled and The Origin of Rubies. Many of the stories I read through were about ghouls and demons. The Boy whom Seven Mothers Suckled is a dark tale about a King who falls in love with a demon. I wanted to tell a modern story about a man who loves a ghoul but not as dark as the original source material.

  1. Wow.. this story is definitely dark! I really like how you laid it out, though, because it was fun to follow along with. Also, who doesn't love some good drama? A story that leaves a mark with you is a good story. You made me think that they were going to pull the marriage off, and I like how the twist was saved for the very end.

  2. Hey Joy,
I really enjoyed your story and am curious about how dark the original one was since you said your take wasn't as dark, but ended with Desmond being devoured! I also appreciated the play on Law and Order and thought it was a smart idea to modernize the story. The imagery you used really made the story more compelling and I especially loved the line "Her hair, red like fire and eyes the color of autumn." I thought the abruptness of the ending was also a great detail since it ends on such a macabre note. Your style of writing makes me excited to read your work in the future!

  3. Oh my. Haha, this gives dramatic-ending vibes like my Helios/Apple Pie story. I love it. It's like everything's going so well, something minorly bad happens, and BOOM something outrageous happens. Like ma'am you were happy for 5 years and had a whole family.. one grievance and you're going to devour your husband? Let's chill out a little bit, reevaluate the situation. Haha, great job Daphne. I liked this story.

  4. Hi Daphne!
I never thought ghouls could be so interesting, and this story indeed is pretty dark. It was similar to many other folktale stories that I have read where a man breaks a promise to woman, but different in that it was quick consequence, unlike in a mermaid story I read that the curse was forever. I thought it was funny that the ghoul eating Desmond was so blunt. The reader would be like "Oh ok.. That just happened."
